Misty Carausu was born and raised in the Heart of the Bay Area, Hayward, California. She began her career in 2005 with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO), Bay Area California. Carausu has been assigned to various units within ACSO, including Detention & Corrections, Court Services, the Eden Township Substation, Peralta Police Services, and in 2014 was transferred to Dublin Police Services, a contract city with ACSO. In 2015, she was assigned as a general detective with an expertise in sexual assault investigation.
In 2018, Carausu promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to Glenn E. Dyer Jail, in Oakland. In 2019, she was transferred to Santa Rita Jail, where she was assigned to the Grievance/Litigation Unit and Security Unit.
In 2024, she was promoted to lieutenant and is currently assigned to oversee the Projects, Supply, Kitchen and Laundry Units at Santa Rita Jail. Carausu is also Coordinator for the Agency’s Health and Wellness Unit.
WAKING UP AFTER AN AMERICAN NIGHTMARE
The presentation is a review of the case of Denise and Aaron Huskins, who were victims of a home invasion. Denise was kidnapped and raped, which Aaron was interrogated and accused of murdering or assaulting Denise. The case received worldwide attention in 2014 and again when the Netflix series, American Nightmare, was released in 2024.
After briefing the case, with videos, photos, and slides, discussion will focus on the systemic issues regarding how victims are treated - by law enforcement, the media, and society in general.
Discussion will include how to overcome hardships and roadblocks officers may face while attempting to do their job, this is especially true when following the evidence and facts of a case.
