commander MICHAEL LOPES, cohasset ma police dept

from no-body to conviction: murder of ana walshe

Michael Lopes, Cohasset Massachusetts Police Department & METROLEC Investigative Support Unit

The murder investigation of Ana Walshe quickly evolved from what initially appeared to be a missing persons case into one of the most scrutinized homicide investigations in recent Massachusetts history. Conducted under intense national and international media attention, investigators were tasked with rapidly separating fact from fiction while navigating evolving witness statements, extensive digital evidence, complex forensic examinations, and the absence of a recovered victim. Lopes will present with Brian Tully.

Commander Michael Lopes is a Massachusetts POST-certified law enforcement executive with over 38 years of experience in municipal and transit policing. He serves as Commander and third-ranking executive officer responsible for command-level leadership and strategic planning. He oversees the Criminal Investigation Division, computer crimes investigations, School Resource Officer program, public records administration, civil rights compliance, and special events operations. Commander Lopes also serves as Commander of the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council (METROLEC) Investigative Support Unit.

Throughout his career, he has led and supervised investigations involving homicide, suspicious deaths, violent crime, sexual assault, gang activity, narcotics trafficking, officer-involved shootings, fatal crashes, and other major criminal incidents. His experience spans patrol operations, criminal investigations, internal affairs, school safety, civil rights compliance, special operations, emergency response, and executive leadership.
