WELCOME TO SOUTHEASTERN HOMICIDE INVESTIGATORS ASSOCIATION (SEHIA)
James Christiansen is a retired Captain from the Muskegon County (MI) Sheriff’s Office. His 30 year career at the Sheriff’s Office took him from Corrections Deputy to Special Operations Captain. Over half of that time was spent in his favorite position, supervising the plain clothes investigative division. He was chosen to lead numerous homicide/robbery task forces. He helped create and lead a multi-jurisdictional tactical team.
During his career he had the opportunity to attend Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command (197 Session) and FBI National Academy (256 Session).
After retiring from the Sheriff’s Office, he spent two years leading a group of investigators that specialize in investigating crimes against senior citizens.
He currently does contract security work to supplement his travel and fishing adventures. When it turns cold in Michigan you can usually find him on his flats skiff somewhere along the Florida or Texas coast.
PRESENTATION
How One Girl, One Gun and One Van Led to a Serial Killer
This presentation will span from April 2013 to May 2018. Within that time frame the presenters will provide an overview of three different crime scenes in three different locations in Muskegon County. The lead investigators will describe the process they went through including working within a task force framework; including what investigation tools were used and how tips and leads were collected and developed; dealing with the public, dealing with the victim’s families, how suspects were developed and vetted, how they dealt with the media, with an overall view of the evidence and witnesses that were developed in each investigation.
As part of this presentation, participants will also have a first-hand look at how and when the changing decisions were made based off these investigations. They will also be informed on various trial strategies used and have an opportunity to have an inside look at certain key moments in the trials that led to some pivotal outcomes. Ultimately, those attending will witness and learn what evidence, witnesses, and other factors led to turning three different crime scenes from three different locations to convictions of first-degree murder, including a murder conviction with no body.
